Most Common Signs of a Plumbing Problem
Do you know what to look for when it comes to plumbing issues? There are many indicators that something may be amiss beneath the surface of your home.
- Foul Smells: A persistent bad odor may be the result of a leak or a partially clogged drain line.
- Mold or Mildew: This is usually the sign of a slow leak or moisture creeping into a space that it is not meant to be.
- Slow Drains: These can be caused by build-up in the lines, roots creeping into the pipes, or even a partially collapsed pipe.
- Leaks, Drips, or pooling water: This can be a result of clogged lines as well as broken seals and joints.
If you keep your sewer lines and drains maintained, these are less likely to result. Don’t forget to check with Foundation Plumbing & Heating for information about our routine maintenance plan.
Professional Drain Cleaning
When a clog or slow drain rears its ugly head, you may be tempted by the rows of chemical drain openers that line the local grocery store shelves. Unfortunately, while these may clear the clog, they may also do damage to the pipes themselves which can lead to their weakening and cracking or collapsing later on. Physical clog removal is a safer way to go, and if our plumbing professionals were to take on your drains, they would likely choose from two different options: snaking or hydro-jetting.
Pipe snakes (also called drain augers) are either hand crank or electrical tools that send a hook or spiral shaped head down into a drainage pipe on a long hose. As the auger turns, it can either latch on to whatever is clogging the drain and pull it back out of the pipe, or break up the clog so that it continues down the pipe and into the sewer.
Hydro jetting is another form of drain cleaning and is perhaps the least damaging to the pipes themselves. Hydro jetting, as you might guess from the name, uses water pressure to clean out pipes. No harsh chemicals used, only the liquid that one would expect to find in a pipe anyway: water.
